Andhra heading for a Coalition Government 2008 ?

The South Indian state of Andhra Pradesh has been progressing very well, after the advent of Information Technology in the State.

Hyderabad has prospered well, under the dynamic rule of N. Chandrababu Naidu of TDP, the then CM of the State some 5 years back. Naidu had ruled the state for 9 years prior to the current reigning Congress Government headed by Y.S.Rajasekhar Reddy (YSR). It was in the reign and dynamic leadership of Naidu that the state witnessed tremendous growth in IT, he was instrumental in creating the infrastructure and the "environment" that the IT city of Hyderabad is known world over today. And today, Hyderabad is home to the best companies and a world class International Airport, largely due to the "Information Technology" sector in the city.

But, the fact that Naidu during his regime had "neglected" the Farmers is clearly a reason for his party TDP's landslide defeat in the hands of the Congress Party headed by YSR. It was Naidu's folly to wholly concentrate his energies only to the IT sector, and to ignore the Agricultural Community of the state. That was the single reason for his party's defeat in the previous state elections.

Having said that, Naidu has "fans" for the things he has done to the IT sector. He has the image of "CEO" of the state, and he has improved the governance structures of the state with the help of IT. He is no doubt an able administrator of the state. Next time he should concentrate on Farmers as well.

But, it is really sad to note that inspite of the tremendous growth that Hyderabad has witnessed in the past 15 years, the region in which it is situated namely the "Telangana", has remained backward largely. Hence we see various politicians and political parties in the region trying to create a separate state of Telangana out the the state of Andhra Pradesh.

We have Telangana Rastra Samiti(TRS) as the front runner of the movement. Also, former home minister of the state in the TDP government, Devender Goud broke away from the TDP and has floated his new party for the cause of Telangana.

However, Congress and TDP have been quite unclear about their stand. They do recognize that this "Telangana" is a "hot issue" and they have to tread cautiously irt the same. So, in the recent bi-elections of the Telanagana region, the unexpected loss of the TRS in the region, had made the picture quite clear that the people of Telangana do not want a separate state.

It is quite clear that the people want growth and prosperity, and only good governance and schemes of the government could help this region prosper, not merely by creating a new separate state.

Huge sums of money from the "Andhra" region has been invested heavily in the city of Hyderabad, and hence any break away of the Telangana region would be a bad news for "Andhra region".

In my view it is quite clear that, raising slogans of Separate state of Telangana is mere Political Opportunism by few selected politicians, who are toying at the idea of becoming the CM of the newly created state, if at all that happens. If the region is backward, then good government policies and honest politicians who want the betterment of the region, should be the answer, the answer should not be to "break a state".

The Megastar of the Telugu Film Industry Chiranjeevi is going to announce his new party on August 15. He has a great fan following in Andhra Pradesh, and certainly he is a force to reckon with in the upcoming State Elections. Recently, there have been some media reports that Chiranjeevi is against the idea of creating separate Telangana, and he would address the issues of backwardness in the region instead. That is clearly a bold step in this political scenario prevailing in the Telangana, and it would be quite interesting how the people of Telangana would vote for him in the State Elections.

But, it remains to be seen if he can emulate the success of former CM and the great Film Actor NT Rama Rao (NTR), who rose to power in the state, within months of his creating the Telugu Desam Pary (TDP). During the time of NTR, there were not many political parties as of today. NTR had only Congress as his formidable opponent, and he rose to power largely due to his image on the silver screen.

But, today the state has many political parties, and the issue of the "Telangana" is a hot potato to handle. So, its a situation of many hands trying to get hold of the pie. Also, the votes would be very fragmented, and each and every contest for the post of MLA will be having a nail biting finish.

Some time back, the Bahujan Samajwadi Party (BSP) chief Mayawati had evinced interest in contesting in the upcoming state elections. But, there has been no news from her irt to her future plans. Also, we have BJP and CPI(M) roots in the state.

I would say, this is a "Pathetic Situation" that is prevailing in the state. I understand that the main aim of elections in a state, for that matter in the country, should be to "elect" a good government, which is able enough to govern the state/country properly.

Eventhough we Indians boast of our democracy, and the world says that India is the "worlds largest democracy", the fact that many politicians have managed to create their own political parties, according to their whims and fancies and thereby have put their "personal interests" higher than the Welfare of the people they are supposed to serve, is quite evident.

I would say, this is the greatest drawback of the "worlds largest democracy". Ideally, political parties should be created not to serve the self-centered interests of a selected few. A political party should be there for the welfare of the people and country as a whole.

Till now we have seen that the government at the centre being paralysed due to the "incredible demands" of the constituent partners. Now, i fear this situation may be a reality in the states as well. It was in Karnataka some time back. And certainly, Andhra Pradesh is moving towards this phase, a "Coalition Government".

If we consider this possibility of a coalition government after the state elections in Andhra Pradesh, then it would be quite evident that those political parties who have "fought" each other prior to the elections, will surely "join hands", giving a reason that "they want a stable and good government", in the process these political parties would concentrate on their own self-interests, putting the interests of the people in the back burner.

If this coalition government is a reality, then what answer would these political parties give to those people who have gave them votes, instead of the other political parties in the same coalition. Is it not "back-stabbing the people" who have voted them.

I guess, it is time we have a "Presidential Form of Government", whose sole aim is to put the welfare of the people and country high. Just creating more and more political parties is sheer waste.

I fear that this folly of many self-centered people, floating their political parties for their personal interests, would impede the progress that the state has been witnessing in the past 15 years.
